Where is an occupancy sign required in New York City?
Under NYC Building Code § 1004.3, every room or space that is an assembly occupancy (including restaurants, bars, community rooms, lobbies, gymnasiums, and event spaces) must have the occupant load posted in a conspicuous location near the main exit or exit access doorway.
What are the NYC DOB specifications?
Signs must be durable, have high-contrast lettering not less than 1/4 inch in height, and clearly state: “OCCUPANCY BY MORE THAN [NUMBER] PERSONS IS DANGEROUS AND UNLAWFUL”.
What is the penalty for missing or incorrect occupancy signs?
Failure to post an approved occupancy sign is a Class 1 DOB violation with immediate administrative fines ranging from $500 to $2,500 plus required reinspection fees.
When you place an order or submit a quote request, our Brooklyn design team creates a 1:1 scaled PDF proof showing exact dimensions, colors, and letter heights. Digital proofs are emailed to you within 2 hours during normal business hours (Mon-Fri 8 AM – 7:30 PM). Production does not begin until you approve the proof.
Under NYC DOB Building Code § 1004.3, you must use the exact maximum occupant load specified on your Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) or official Place of Assembly (PA) permit issued by the Department of Buildings. If your building’s C of O does not list an exact number, consult with your registered architect or engineer to compute the occupant load.
