Who needs it: NYC buildings with 3 or more apartments that have fuel-burning equipment, such as a gas or oil boiler or gas stoves, or an enclosed garage.
One notice for the building’s common area
NYC law requires carbon monoxide alarms in apartments and sets duties for both owners and tenants. HMC Section 27-2045 and HPD’s rules in 28 RCNY Chapter 12 require a notice that tells residents about the building’s CO alarm rules in plain language. HPD issued 3,040 violations for it in 2025.
HPD allows one combined notice for the gas leak, smoke, carbon monoxide and natural gas detector rules. If you want one sign for smoke and CO, choose our Smoke Detectors and CO Notice instead.
HPD allows one combined notice for smoke, CO and natural gas detectors. Many owners post the combined notice, while others prefer separate signs.
No. The notice informs tenants. Working CO alarms must still be installed within 15 feet of each bedroom door and maintained.
Owners give written information on testing, maintenance and what to do if the alarm sounds. That is a handout, separate from this posted notice.
