Who needs it: every tenant-occupied NYC dwelling, including rented one and two family homes. It is posted in a common area and given to tenants with every lease or renewal.
Post one in a common area and give a copy with every lease
HMC Section 27-2005(f), added by Local Law 153 of 2016, requires owners to post a notice in a common area explaining what tenants should do if they suspect a gas leak: leave, call 911 first, then call the gas company. The same notice goes out with every new lease and renewal, in English and Spanish.
It has been the most cited HPD sign violation every year since 2019. HPD allows it to be combined with the detector notices, so one sign can cover both rules once natural gas detector notices are due on January 1, 2027.
Every dwelling with tenants needs it, including rented one and two family homes.
