Who needs it: every NYC building with 3 or more apartments registered with HPD, and one or two family homes where the owner does not live.
One sign per building entrance hall
HMC Section 27-2104(a) requires a sign in the entrance hall showing the building’s HPD registration (serial) number and street address, and HPD’s rule 28 RCNY Section 25-81 sets its format. Inspectors often check it first, and HPD issued 3,056 violations for it in 2025.
Your registration number comes from your yearly HPD property registration, due every September 1. Give us the number and address and we print them, or order blank and write them in.
It is on your HPD property registration. You can also look up your building on HPD Online.
The number usually stays the same, but you must renew the registration every year by September 1.
A one or two family home must register with HPD when the owner does not live there.
