How to Certify Correction of an HPD Violation
Here's the part a lot of owners miss: fixing a violation doesn't make it go away. Until you certify the correction with HPD, it stays open on your record. The good news is that certifying is free, and for most violations you can do it online.
The quick answer
In short: After you fix a violation, certify the correction with HPD by the date on your Notice of Violation. Use eCertification online for most violations, or the paper form. Certifying is free. Late or false certifications can mean penalties, fees and a reinspection.
Correction deadlines by class
From HPD's Clear Violations page, counted from the date of service:
Non hazardous: 90 days.
Hazardous: 30 days.
Immediately hazardous: 24 hours.
Lead paint, window guards, mold and pests: 21 days. Self closing doors: 14 days. Heat and hot water: no time allowed.
Your Notice of Violation shows both the correct by date and the certify by date for each item.

What if you miss the deadline?
Violations that weren't certified on time, or were falsely certified, may need a Dismissal Request reinspection, which has a fee. Starting July 1, 2026, those applications go to HPD's Code Enforcement Central Violations Administration Unit at 345 Adams Street in Brooklyn. Civil penalties can also apply if HPD takes the case to Housing Court.
Never certify something that isn't fixed
HPD audits certifications, and tenants can challenge them, which triggers an inspection. A false certification keeps the violation open and can lead to civil penalties and a spot on HPD's Certification Watchlist. If you can't finish in time, fix it as soon as possible and then certify honestly.
Sign violations are the easy ones
Most of the violations in our common sign violations guide can be fixed in a day once the sign arrives. Mount it, snap a photo, certify online and you're done. To avoid the whole process next time, walk your building with the complete checklist and read what inspectors look for.
What this looks like in practice
Say an owner gets a violation for an outdated superintendent sign. They order a new super sign, mount it two days later, take a photo, log into eCertification and certify that night. A week later, HPD Online shows the violation as certified.
