Who needs it: buildings whose meters sit in a shared room or closet behind a closed door. No NYC rule requires it.
One for each meter room door
In a lot of NYC buildings the meters sit behind a plain cellar door, next to the boiler room, the storage room and the trash room. Meter readers, electricians and firefighters often show up when the super is busy or off site, and this sign tells them which door to open.
We found no HPD or city rule that requires it, so it won’t cause a violation by itself. It is good practice, and it saves time on every reading and service call. Inside the room, the Electrical Code does require the main service switch to be marked, which our Main Line Disconnect Switch Sign covers. Many owners add an In Case of Fire Use No Water sign on the same door.
