Who needs it: buildings with a transformer vault, switchgear room or other room where water would be ineffective or dangerous in a fire.
One for each door into the room
NYC Building Code Section 905.1 says any room with equipment where water would be ineffective or hazardous in a fire must have a conspicuous sign on each door. The sign states what the room is used for and carries the warning IN CASE OF FIRE, USE NO WATER. Water on live electrical equipment is dangerous for anyone fighting the fire.
The current code doesn’t list the rooms. The 1968 code named transformer vaults and high tension switchboard rooms, so ask your engineer or the FDNY which rooms count in your building. We print the room’s use above the warning, for example ELECTRICAL ROOM. Mark the main switch inside with a Main Line Disconnect Switch Sign, and browse the rest of our fire safety signs.
