Who needs it: NYC buildings that heat with fuel oil. It is a state rule once total storage on site is over 1,100 gallons, and good practice below that.
One per tank, plus one at each fill port that needs it
Once a building stores more than 1,100 gallons of oil in total, New York State treats it as a petroleum bulk storage facility, and the tank system must be registered with the State DEC. Under the state rules in 6 NYCRR Part 613, a registered tank is marked with its registration number, design capacity and working capacity, and an underground tank also gets a label at the fill port that shows the type of oil.
This plate puts all of those numbers in one place, so drivers know how much the tank holds and your super has them at every delivery. We print each plate with your own details, one per tank. It goes in the same room as the Boiler Room Door Sign and the Key to Heating System Notice HPD requires on that door.
If total oil storage is over 1,100 gallons, the tanks are registered with the DEC and must be marked. For smaller tanks the plate is good practice.
Design capacity is what the tank is built to hold. Working capacity is the part you can fill before the overfill device engages, so it is a little less.
The tank number and registration ID are on your DEC registration. Your oil company or tank installer can confirm both capacities.
No. The fill port color code is a separate marking. Your oil company can help with it.
The marking rules here are New York State DEC rules. The FDNY also regulates fuel oil storage in NYC, so check your FDNY permit too.
Yes. Aluminum resists oil, heat and damp, indoors or at a sidewalk fill.
