E-Bike and Battery Charging Signs for NYC Buildings

By the HPD Signs NYC teamUpdated November 20264 min read

Lithium-ion battery fires from e-bikes and scooters have become one of the most serious fire risks in NYC apartment buildings. Owners and boards ask us all the time: is there a required e-bike sign? Here's the honest answer, and what signs actually help.

The quick answer

In short: As of late 2026, NYC doesn't require a specific e-bike or battery charging sign in apartment buildings. But blocking stairs, halls and exits is a Fire Code problem, and many buildings now post e-bike rules and battery safety signs as a smart, low cost precaution.

What the law does say

Most of the city's e-bike laws focus on sellers, not landlords. NYC bans the sale of e-bikes and batteries that aren't certified to recognized safety standards, bans selling batteries rebuilt from used cells, and requires shops that sell or rent e-bikes to display battery safety information. The FDNY urges building owners to provide safe charging and storage when they can, and asks tenants to check with their building.

What applies to every building: stairs, halls and exits have to stay clear. A row of e-bikes in a stairwell or a bike charging by the only exit is exactly what fire inspectors look for.

Put your e-bike rules in writing

Signs work best with a written policy. Many co-ops, condos and rental buildings now adopt e-bike house rules covering where bikes can be stored, whether charging is allowed in apartments and what happens if rules are broken. You can include those house rules in Part I of your FDNY guide, labeled as building rules, so every resident gets them.

Where to post battery signs

Lobby

A short battery safety sign on your notice wall, near the fire safety notice.

Stairs

"Keep exits clear" near stair doors, next to the red close the door sign.

Bike room

Charging rules and hours on the door, plus a no smoking or no open flame reminder.

Elevators

A small reminder if your building limits e-bikes in elevators.

What this looks like in practice

Picture a 40 unit building where a few tenants charge e-bikes in the hallway outside their doors. The board adopts a policy, sets up a storage room with a few outlets on a timer, and posts three signs: one in the lobby, one on each stair door and one on the bike room. Hallways clear up within a week, and the building's next fire inspection goes smoothly.

Tips from our shop

  1. Keep the wording short.

Three or four words in big type beat a paragraph nobody reads. Our lobby placement guide shows where signs read best.

  2. Add Spanish and other languages.

Many delivery workers and tenants read Spanish, Chinese or Bengali first.

  3. Pair signs with action.

A sign that says "no charging in halls" works better when there's a safe place to charge.

Quick answers

Does NYC require an e-bike sign in apartment buildings?

Not a specific one as of late 2026. Keeping exits clear is required, and battery safety signs are a recommended precaution.

Can a building ban e-bike charging in apartments?

Many co-ops, condos and landlords set house rules on charging and storage. Check your leases and bylaws, and talk to your attorney before adopting a ban.

Where should battery signs go?

In the lobby, near stair doors, in any bike room and in elevators if you limit e-bikes there.

Not sure what your building needs?
