Which Signs Do I Need?
Answer a few quick questions about your building. We'll show every sign NYC requires, what it costs and the pack that fits. Takes about a minute.
How many apartments are in the building?
Count every unit, including the one you live in.
Do you or your family live there?
Matters for 1 and 2 family homes and HPD registration.
How many floors?
Every floor needs a floor number sign. Include the ground floor.
Is there a boiler room?
Usually a locked room in the basement with the heating system.
Any rent stabilized apartments?
Even one stabilized unit needs a notice. Not sure? Check with DHCR.
Does the building have gas service?
Gas stoves, a gas boiler or gas water heaters.
Is there an elevator?

Common questions
Which signs does every NYC apartment building need?
Buildings with 3 or more apartments need the core set: registration number sign, superintendent sign, inspection frame, smoke and CO notice, gas leak notice, fire safety notice, housing information guide and floor numbers.
Do 1 and 2 family homes need HPD signs?
Mostly no. Rented homes still give tenants the gas leak notice, keep smoke and CO alarms working and show the street number. Register with HPD if you do not live there.
Do co-ops and condos need the same signs?
Yes. Co-ops and condos with 3 or more apartments follow the same lobby sign rules as rental buildings.
What if I am not sure about rent stabilized units?
Check your building with DHCR at 718-264-3800 or hcr.ny.gov. If any unit is stabilized, post the rent stabilized notice in English and Spanish.
Can you check my building for me?
Yes. Send us your address and number of apartments and we will send back your exact list.
